| Analysis J&J enters the high-stakes race to find new medicines for Alzheimer's disease by paying $1.5b for a 18.5% stake in Elan, which has had a 10-year collaboration with Wyeth to find a drug to address the build-up of amyloid plaques in the brain, one of the trademarks of Alzheimers. The program includes a prospective vaccine for Alzheimer's. As part of the deal J&J will create a separate company and commit up to $500m to continue the development of bapineuzumab. Elan receives a 49.9% interest in the new J&J company. By 2015, Alzheimer's could afflict as many as 6.5 million Americans; industry analysts predict a new disease-modifying medicine could generate as much as $10b in annual sales. | |
