Principals

James A. Walden
James A. WaldenThe founder of the firm, Mr. Walden is a prominent figure in healthcare industry mergers and acquisitions.

Earlier in his career, he was associated with Phillips Appel & Walden Inc. for more than 24 years, beginning as a registered representative and eventually becoming the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors. During his tenure there, Mr. Walden expanded the firm from six employees to over 1,000 employees in six separate offices, making the firm the largest non-clearing member firm of the New York Stock Exchange. At various times, Mr. Walden headed the underwriting department, which brought more than 40 companies public; the syndications department which organized the firm's participation in thousands of underwritings; and the retail brokerage department which grew under his direction from 10 salespeople to more than 600. In 1982 he engineered the sale of Phillips Appel & Walden to a firm associated with Merrill Lynch & Co. In 1987, he founded The Walden Group.

Richard S. Cohen
Richard S. CohenMr. Cohen has been President of The Walden Group for more than 12 years and has orchestrated more than 50 merger and acquisition transactions there.  He is an expert on healthcare strategic dynamics, valuation, and complex transactions.

Frequently, Mr. Cohen is called upon to lecture at major healthcare conferences and universities on the subject of mergers and acquisitions and related topics. He was Co-Chair of the 7th Annual Healthcare M & A Conference in late 2009. He also chaired a conference, entitled "E-Commerce Strategies for Medical Device Manufacturers", as part of the annual Medical Design and Device convention in New York City. He also serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of MX Magazine, a leading journal serving healthcare executives.

Mr. Cohen began his career as a corporate and securities attorney at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, a prominent law firm specializing in mergers and acquisitions. He then was associated with The Trump Group, a corporate acquisitions firm, where he was a senior officer. He has been an officer and director of several public and private companies, including president of manufacturing and distribution companies. As president, he ran a manufacturer of security devices for five years. Mr. Cohen has been associated with several medical supply companies for more than 20 years. He has a B.A. degree from Cornell University, a J.D. degree from The New York University School of Law, where he was an editor of the law review, and attended the Leonard M. Stern Graduate School of Business, New York University.

As a member of the Licensing Executive Society, Mr. Cohen served on the boards of several philanthropic institutions, and has been a guest lecturer at Columbia University's Graduate School of Business. In 2006, he received a Distinguished Service Award for his work for one philanthropy.

Daniel J. Doyle
Daniel J.  DoyleMr. Doyle is the former President of C.R. Bard's Patient Care Division where he grew sales several-fold, substantially raised profit margins, and completed several corporate acquisitions and licensing transactions. He was also Director of Business Development for C.R. Bard Corporate, where he was responsible for growth strategies for Bard Access, Davol, Bard Urology, Bard Medical, and Bard Endoscopic Technologies. At Bard's Patient Care Division, Mr. Doyle headed up a 225-person organization manufacturing and marketing disposable devices and equipment sold to hospitals, physician's offices, and home and long-term care markets.

Mr. Doyle is an expert in strategic planning, market assessments and introductions, and market share expansion. He brings to the table not only professional functionality of the highest order, but also the perspective and wisdom of a successful chief executive of a major healthcare firm. Since he left Bard, he has been called upon to provide these and other services for more than 65 companies, including Johnson & Johnson, GlaxoSmithKline, ConvaTec and many early smaller domestic and foreign companies.

Merle Symes
Merle SymesMr. Symes is the former President and CEO of the U.S. division of Ulrich Medical, a German maker of spine, radiology and other surgical products where he grew the company 60% in three years. Prior to that he served in senior positions at Bausch & Lomb, Wyeth, Monsanto and DuPont. Mr. Symes is an expert in technology management, new product development, market positioning, acquisition planning, merger integration and turnarounds, among other critical functions. He has worked with management teams from Fortune 500 companies to startups in developing a culture of innovation, entrepreneurialism and risk management. He has a Wharton MBA and a B.S. in Chemical Engineering.

Diane Thome
Diane ThomeMs. Thome was an executive in the Healthcare Practice for Opinion Research Corporation, a Director of Strategic Planning at Little Company of Mary Hospital, and Senior Director of Provider Development at MedCare HMO. Under her own company, she has provided cost-effective highly professional direct market research services by organizing incisive focus groups, physician feedback programs, and expert market and product analysis. Ms. Thome's clients have included Bahavioral Research, Inc., The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and Axxiom Healthcare Alliance.
